Ethical Art

17/11/1996
Work that is involved with exploring ethical behaviour, with the sorts of choices people are confronted with every day. Hobson’s choice-type situations.

People are not isolated individuals, not in every way. Society is the collective set of behaviourisms and demands, understandings and relationships between people. A person’s behaviour will have an effect on that society, as we are all dependent on other people’s opinions and behaviour for our own sense of self. Our shared cultural values shape our lives, help give them its form.

Without knowledge we lapse into casual understandings and explanations of the Universe and of phenomena: superstition. Superstition is not the derogatory term for deeply held cultural beliefs; it is the accurate term for an illogical fear and awe for unexplained phenomena, coupled with a crude mistrust of science.
