Hazard Imagery

02/09/1996
My work so far has, broadly speaking fallen into a number of categories; namely hazard imagery, childhood and the 70s and space themes. But perhaps I’ve been too strict in the usage of these terms.

The symbols are pretty self-explanatory. But they can be used as metaphors. My idea was to explore the iconography of containment. The symbols used in hazard warning signs are all used to compromise and direct movement. These are images of authority; they prescribe allowed passage. These limitations are imposed, they are not our ‘natural’ ones, those that we have come to ourselves; they come from without, from someone who has by definition power over us, the power to shape our physical space.
