Expatiate Extempore 1
Expatiate Extempore 1

Acrylic on canvas,
5 paintings, each 152 x 122cm
with accompanying booklet
1996

This is a piece I produced in my last year of art college, when I restricted myself to working only in black and yellow. My first presentation that year was Expatiate Extempore, a "painting installation", in which I tried to get around my tutors' dislike of hard-edged abstraction by producing a parody of an art exhibition.

The idea was to present an over-conceptualised reason for the paintings' existence, given in a helpful accompanying booklet which had an interview I conducted with myself, as well as a moody shot of the brooding artist-type. In the end, it probably wasn't parodic enough; one thing I realised at the end was I really actually liked abstract art a lot.
